Shapleigh, Frank (1842-1906)

Born/lived: Boston, MA/Jackson, NH, St. Augustine, FL. Best known: one of the best known New Hampshire White Mountain painters. He had a studio at Crawford House, Mount Washington Valley in NH and a studio in Boston with John Appleton Brown. He had a studio in St. Augustine, FL at the rear of the luxury hotel opened by Henry Flagler. There he painted local points of interest such as street scenes with old houses, the sea wall, and the old forts. Studied: Lowell Inst Drawing School, Boston, MA; under E. Lambinet in Paris. Member: Boston Art Club. Exhibited: Boston Anthenaeum; National Academy of Design; Boston National Academy of Design; Boston Art Club. Work: Farnsworth Art Museum, Rockland ME; Hood Museum of Art; Dartmouth College, NH; New Britain Museum of American Art; Portland Museum of Art; University of NH; NH Historical Society.
